Frequently Asked Questions

What is stamp duty and who pays it?

Stamp duty is a state government tax on property transactions. The buyer pays stamp duty at the time of property registration. It is calculated on the higher of the agreement value or the government's circle rate (ready reckoner value). Non-payment or under-payment is a legal offence.

Do women buyers get stamp duty concession?

Yes, most states offer 1-2% concession to female buyers. Delhi: women pay 4% vs 6% for men. Maharashtra: women pay 5% (same as men in most cities, but specific areas have concession). UP: women pay 6% vs 7% for men. For joint ownership with a woman as first owner, some states allow the lower rate.

Can stamp duty be paid online?

Yes. Most states now allow online payment via GRAS (Government Receipt Accounting System) portal or through their state registration department websites. Online stamp duty is accepted in Maharashtra (IGR portal), Karnataka (Kaveri Online), Delhi, and most other states.
