Frequently Asked Questions
What is LTCG tax on equity in India?
Long Term Capital Gains on equity shares and equity mutual funds held for more than 1 year are taxed at 10% on gains exceeding ₹1 lakh per financial year. There is no indexation benefit. Short-term (under 1 year) gains are taxed at 15% STCG.
What is tax harvesting?
Tax harvesting is selling equity investments every year to book gains up to ₹1 lakh (the LTCG exemption limit) and reinvesting. This resets your cost basis at the higher price and uses the annual exemption. Over 10 years, this strategy can save significant LTCG tax.
How is LTCG on property calculated after Budget 2024?
From Budget 2024, LTCG on property is taxed at 12.5% WITHOUT indexation (changed from 20% with indexation). For properties purchased before July 2024, you can choose whichever is more beneficial: old 20% with indexation or new 12.5% without indexation.
